Be Well Prepared One of the best ways to avoid looking foolish in front of your audience is to be sufficiently prepared before speaking. You should know what you are speaking about, who you will be speaking to, and the conditions in which you will be delivering your speech. A professional doesn’t leave anything to chance before the big game, an important performance, or a critical presentation to corporate executives. Strategies should be laid out, all material ready, contingency plans should be made, and every other detail accounted for before delivering your speech. When you are well prepared, your chances of failure or making mistakes are greatly reduced. When all your bases are covered, you will find it easier to relax and put aside some of your fears. It is good to be aware of what type of audience you will be speaking to before you have to give your presentation. This will give you an idea of how to choose your subject matter and what the tone of your speech should be. If you are speaking in front of important people or at an important event, that fact may increase your anxiety. However, it is good to know these things ahead of time so that you have ample time to mentally prepare yourself for the event. It is also a good idea to become familiar with the conditions under which you will be delivering your presentation. If you can, check out the area you will be speaking in beforehand. If you will be using a microphone, check it out and become familiar with the equipment if at all possible. In some cases, you may just be giving a presentation in a small conference room at work. Still, it is not a bad idea to check to the room out beforehand so you can try to visualize how you will make your presentation. Going through this process can make you feel better prepared and give you more confidence when the time comes for you to make your speech. |
