Effects of Fear What happens to many individuals – even before they begin speaking – is that their heart begins to beat faster and their mouth becomes very dry. Some people may even become nauseated or feel very light-headed. Once he or she starts speaking, their heart continues to beat rapidly and he/she may hear a tremble in their voice. Their entire body may start to shake (or at least feel as though it is shaking) and the individual may stutter or start speaking too quickly. Although some people calm down once they get started, others may become even more nervous and ramble incoherently through their material. In such cases it is really no wonder why many people do not ever want to endure giving a public presentation ever again. Again, the reason many people become nervous in the first place is the fear of looking foolish in front of others or fear of rejection by others-especially their peers or other important people. Many individuals fear that their minds will go blank or that their lack of speaking skills will lower the opinion that others have of them. Being humiliated can destroy a person’s ego and self-confidence, not to mention the fact that it can really ruin one’s day. |
